Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1070–664 BCE.

A finely modeled mummiform funerary ushabti in blue-green glazed faience, the figure standing with arms crossed over the chest and holding agricultural implements, wearing a tripartite wig with a black-painted fillet, the serene face with delicately rendered features. A single register of black-painted hieroglyphic inscription descends the front of the body in the manner of Third Intermediate Period funerary figures, with further painted detailing and a dorsal pillar to the reverse. Inscription translates as “The Osiris, the god‘s father of Amun [a type of priest], Padikhonsu, true of voice".

Height 4 1/2 inches (10.4 cm), plus custom display base.

The surface shows attractive age-worn glaze with warm earthen tones breaking through, fully consistent with ancient burial. Such faience ushabtis were placed in tombs by the dozens or hundreds to labor on behalf of the deceased in the afterlife. Provenance: Private New York City Egyptologist collection, acquired in the USA.
