Late Period, 26th Dynasty or later, circa 664 to 332 BC

Finely carved in mottled green stone with a domed back, the serrated clypeus above a small head with circular eyes, flanked by hatched triangular panels. Below the broad prothorax the elytra are separated by a central groove with incised bordering lines, the slender legs folded neatly beneath the body. The underside is smoothly polished and left uninscribed, as appropriate for a heart scarab symbolic of rebirth and protection in the afterlife. Old surface with mineral deposits, small edge chips and a stable old crack across the base.
