North Coastal Peru, Late Intermediate Period, Ca. 1100 to 1476 AD

Interlocking Stepped Frets & Diamonds (Chakana / Mountain-Water Glyphs): The primary repeating field in both the vertical bands and the lower hem consists of diagonal step-fret lattices forming diamond reserves. In Andean cosmology, stepped motifs traditionally represent mountains (apus), terraces, and water channels, symbolizing agricultural fertility and irrigation. Coastal Chimú weavers frequently codified natural fauna into interlocking positive-and-negative geometric patterns:
The stepped angular hooks and diagonal points inside each diamond cell form stylized profile birds (Seabirds / Pelicans / Cormorants) with open beaks and crested heads. The alternating zigzag ribbons mimic ocean waves, rip currents, and the undulating movement of mythical two-headed serpents. The small, strategically placed red and pink supplementary yarn brocading highlights the "eyes" or centers of each module, a standard Chimú convention to denote life, energy, and visual focal points within repeating openwork grids.
The bottom mustard-yellow band represents a diamond-mesh fishnet pattern terminating in fringe, emphasizing the coastal maritime identity central to Chimú religion and society.
