Late Qing Dynasty to early Republic Period (ca. late 19th to early 20th Century), in the Northern Wei / Tang archaistic taste.

Molded and carved dark earthenware / pottery with dark lacquer/pigment finish, earthen encrustation, and remnant gilt/poly-chrome traces. Inscriptions: Retains an old collector’s/dealer’s ink paper label on the reverse inscribed “宋時代觀音...” (identifying the subject as a Song Dynasty style Guanyin). Formed as an arched, pointed mandorla (leaf-shaped stele) set upon a stepped, molded rectangular plinth.  High-relief standing figure of Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara) depicted with hands clasped in front holding an attribute beneath long, flowing robes cinched with a high sash across the chest. The serene head is surmounted by a high topknot (ushnisha), framed by an enveloping aureole deeply incised with dense scrolling cloud and flame patterns (huoyanwen).
