Dayak peoples (Modang, Bahau, or Ngaju Dayak), Borneo (Kalimantan, Indonesia) 20th cent.

Dense ironwood (ulin) with weathered, dark smoke-and-handling encrustation and natural aged patina, carved as a semi-cylindrical wooden bust terminating in a solid post, pierced with two sets of deep lateral holes for structural pegging/lashings.  Powerfully sculpted visage with pronounced cylindrical protruding peg eyes, an angular jutting brow with incised zig-zag/serrated fringe, a broad triangular nose, and an open, downward-curving prognathic mouth. Head is flanked by stylized, scrolling zoomorphic (aso / dragon-dog) ear ornaments and a swept-back crest of hair, typical of aristocratic Dayak spirit guardians. The dual drilled lateral mounting holes indicate this was fastened as an architectural peg, a puppet, a decorative gable/beam strut for a communal longhouse, or a structural support from a secondary burial ossuary/sarcophagus (sandung).
