Ptolemaic Period 305-30 B.C.

Carved from a single block of cream-buff limestone with remaining areas of black bitumen or ancient surface residue. The lion is depicted lying on an integral narrow plinth, resting in a characteristically relaxed yet vigilant pose with its forelegs crossed at the front, its body elongated, and its long tail curling up and around the right rear flank. The head is slightly turned, featuring deeply set almond-shaped eyes, an incised, stylized mane framing the face in structured locks, and pronounced, erect ears. The overall stylistic treatment reflects the synthesis of classical Egyptian apotropaic iconography and Greco-Egyptian stylistic naturalism typical of late Hellenistic and Ptolemaic sculpture.
Dimensions 4-1/4 in L. x 2-3/8 in H.;  3-1/2 in H. on block base.

Provenance Private New Jersey Collection; Christie's New York, Lot 49 (affixed with circular paper auction label to underside of wooden base: "CHRISTIE'S LOT 49").
