Late Period Circa 715 to 300 BCE

A pale green colored standing servant shabti for Osiris, the Sem priest, Tchefnen, son of the Sem priest with single line of hieroglyphic inscription down back pillar.

Size 4 inches H.

Ushabtis (also shabti or shawabti) were placed in tombs in great numbers, ideally one for each day of the year plus overseers, to serve as substitute laborers for the deceased in the fields of the afterlife when called upon; they are among the most characteristic and widely collected of all ancient Egyptian funerary objects. The mummiform form with crossed arms, agricultural tools, and tripartite wig is the standard Late Period type, frequently bearing a vertical column of inscription naming the owner, which here appears worn or absent. The piece descends from the broad Late Period production in faience and composition that supplied tombs across Egypt from the 26th through the 30th Dynasties.

Ex Private Vancouver, Canada Collection
