Second Intermediate Period (Hyksos era), Dynasties XIII – XVII, c. 1750 – 1550 BCE,

Upper register: a crocodile shown in profile, body elongated horizontally with cross-hatched scaly back — emblematic of the god Sobek, lord of the Nile, and a symbol of royal might and aggressive protection.  Lower register: a recumbent gazelle or antelope, legs folded beneath the body, with cross-hatched body texturing; a desert-margin animal associated with swiftness, regeneration, and Levantine Hyksos iconography of the zoomorphic design-class scarab tradition.

Comparable cross-hatched-ground SIP scarabs with crocodile and gazelle / antelope motifs are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Walters Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museums Scotland (Petrie Tell el-Ajjul material), and the LACMA Cooney corpus, and are catalogued in Tufnell, Studies on Scarab Seals II* (1984) and Hornung & Staehelin (1976).

Size 5/8 in L. Intact. Pierced longitudinally through the body — perforation clearly visible on the ends.
