Nagada Culture, circa 3600-3200 B.C.

The Egyptian Predynastic black-topped red-ware jar is highly significant for understanding ancient Egyptian society, technology, and ritual from the Naqada II period (circa 3650–3300 BCE). These jars are among the earliest fine-ware ceramics of the Nile Valley and represent early advances in pottery-making, including their distinctive aesthetic and technical mastery using Nile clay with a hematite slip for the red body and carbonizing for the black top.  Black-topped red-ware jars were developed for both domestic and funerary use; their cone-shaped bottoms allowed them to be wedged in sand, a design adaptation for the environment. Their manufacture involved sophisticated firing techniques: the red was achieved with a slip and burnishing, while the black top resulted from inverting the vessel during firing, which carbonized the rim in sawdust or ash.

Condition: Old  chips near rim and related age weathering.

Size:  5'' x 6'' x 6'' (13 x 15 x 15 cm). Old label with faded ink on center.
