 Central Etruria, Archaic Period, ca. 600–550 B.C.,

Wheel-thrown earthenware fired in reduction to a lustrous black burnished surface, the deep carinated bowl decorated at the waist with a notched toothed-ridge band and raised on a short ringed stem above a flaring disc foot, with two tall looped strap handles rising elegantly above the rim; kantharoi were wine-drinking vessels used in banquet and ritual contexts, and the form is closely associated with wine service and Dionysian imagery in the ancient Mediterranean.
