Nayarit, Ixtlán del Río style, West Mexico, Protoclassic, circa 100 BC – AD 250

Polychrome painted ceramic with reddish-brown slip and cream pigment.  This expressive seated male figure is rendered in the distinctive Ixtlán del Río style of ancient Nayarit, a West Mexican shaft-tomb tradition associated with the modern states of Nayarit, Jalisco, and Colima. He is modeled with legs folded in front of the body and his right arm raised, holding a ceremonial mace or implement — a posture frequently associated with warriors, chieftains, or ritual participants in Ixtlán del Río ceramic sculpture. The wide, animated face features an open mouth, almond-shaped applied eyes, and the characteristic broad nose with perforated septum supporting a large nose ring.  The figure is richly ornamented with multiple stacked ear spools, a large nasal ornament, beaded collar, and a loincloth indicated by the cream-pigmented tab between the legs. He wears a dramatic crested headdress encircling the forehead, decorated with a row of upright tabs or feather-like projections and incised banding picked out in cream slip. The body is finished in burnished reddish-brown slip with cream polychrome accents defining the garments, jewelry, and body paint — a hallmark of Protoclassic Ixtlán del Río ceramics meant for placement in shaft tombs as funerary offerings.
