West Mexico,  Ixtlan del Rio, Nayarit. Protoclassic, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250.

The figure wears a flaring wrap skirt painted in cream and yellow over a warm red slip, the hem and waistband picked out with narrow bands and a continuous procession of large diamond‑shaped panels, suggesting a woven textile with complex brocade or embroidered motifs. The skirt’s bold geometric patterning not only animates the broad hips and short legs, but also signals status, evoking the richly patterned garments seen on high‑ranking women and ritual participants in the Nayarit ceramic corpus.

Her large, multi‑lobed earspools are modeled as thick, rolled ornaments that project dramatically from the sides of the head, emphasizing the breadth of the face and recalling the heavy ear ornaments worn by Nayarit elites in life and in funerary display. Together with the simple banded headdress across the forehead, they frame the head and mark her as a person of rank, perhaps a community matron, ritual specialist, or honored ancestor.

The right arm is bent sharply so that the forearm rests on the shoulder, cradling a tall cylindrical bowl painted with vertical cream stripes over red. This abbreviated but emphatic pose is a classic West Mexican gesture of offering, transforming the vessel into a permanent attribute that identifies her role as bearer of food or drink—whether cacao, pulque, or ritual offerings presented to the ancestors and deities. The close coupling of bowl and body, pressed against the shoulder, underscores the idea that provisioning, feasting, and ceremonial exchange were central to her identity.
