A framed group of Chimú textile fragments from the north coast of Peru, Late Intermediate Period, c. 1000–1470 AD. Woven in naturally brown cotton and brocaded with camelid-fiber (alpaca) supplementary wefts in gold, yellow, and red, the panels are patterned with stepped profile birds and diamond-and-hook border bands. Most fragments derive from a single elite garment (a loincloth or tunic panel), with additional bands assembled to complete the display. The maritime bird imagery echoes the stepped-bird friezes of the Chimú capital, Chan Chan.  

Professionally mounted in a clear acrylic (plexi) case frame size: 21 in. W x 24 in. H (53.3 cm W x 61 cm H), plexiglass case

Condition: Ancient fragments stable and well preserved; minor small crack to plexi at lower left; fragments reassembled/mounted for display

Provenance: Mr. Sid Hart, Cos Cob, Connecticut, acquired 1980s–1990s.
