Circa 4th to 1st  Century BCE

This vessels was closely associated with personal hygiene: athletes and bathers used them to store and pour oil, which was applied to the body and then scraped off with a strigil after exercise or bathing.

The use of bronze as the material indicates a more affluent owner, as ceramic examples were far more common. Bronze vessels were valued for their durability and aesthetic qualities, like the vivid green patina that forms over centuries.
The small vessel was portable enough to be carried by athletes or bathers.

The handle, which has been reattached, is separately made—a practice seen in higher-quality metalwork—allowing for strength and more refined artistry in the thumb rest, supporting secure manipulation with oily hands. The small opening hole in the top view indicates functional design for tightly controlling the flow of the vessel’s valuable contents.

Aryballoi originated in Greece and remained popular through Hellenistic and Roman periods, evolving in shape but always associated with gymnasia, athletic contests, and bathing rituals.

Rich green crystalline patina. Size 3-1/4  inches (8.15cm.) L. Handle reattached.
