Northern coast of Peru, Circa 900 to 1375 AD

This fine reduction-fired blackware stirrup-spout effigy bottle features a central noble or dignitary seated cross-legged on a raised rectangular throne. The primary figure wears a large, crescent-lobed headdress deeply decorated with incised geometric bands, concentric circles, and linear hatching, complemented by facial tattoo or paint markings, circular ear spools (orejeras), and a multi-tiered incised collar. Positioned directly to the figure's right sits a large bulbous mace or staff of office.  Sturdy stirrup handle connects to the back of the seat and terminates in a vertical spout.

Size 6 inches (15.24cm) H. 

Functionally, vessels of this elevated craftsmanship served as high-status funerary offerings (offrendas) placed within elite tombs to reinforce the deceased's authority and accompany them into the spiritual realm. A comparable piece exhibiting similar molded construction and incised iconography can be found in The Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession number 1970.245.36 (Bottle with Figures, Lambayeque/Sicán, 9th–11th century).  Compare Donnan, Christopher, Ceramic of Ancient Peru,  for close parallel of shape.
