West Mexico,  Protoclassic, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250

According to the Sotheby’s catalogue: “This large youthful figure rests atop a small four-legged stool, significant of his elevated status, as do the detailed clothing, headdress, and jewelry. A small ceremonial bowl balances on the knee. His confident demeanor is evident in the focused expression characteristic of the Pihuamo style (so-called from a region of the Jalisco and Colima border), with large coffee-bean style eyes, pursed lips, and a slender nose. Ornaments include the armbands, nose bead, varied bead necklace, and headstraps adorned with conical and ridge elements, likely shells."

Size: 19-1/2” (49.5cm) H. x 9-1/4” (23.5cm) W.

For the Pihuamo style, see Hasso von Winning, Shaft Tomb Figures of West Mexico, Los Angeles, 1974, pp. 178-179, figs. 332-337”. Strong scattered areas of mineral deposits on the surface.
