Late Classic Period, ca. AD 600–900

This is a fine example of the stucco-decorated cylinder vessel — one of the most prestigious formats in Classic Maya court pottery. The combination of stucco (lime plaster) applied in relief over the vessel body with an incised glyph band at the rim places it squarely within the Late Classic Maya elite ceramic tradition used for cacao/chocolate drinking and funerary offerings.

Slightly tapering cylindrical vessel, hand-coiled, fired in reduced atmosphere to grey-brown. Upper register: continuous band of incised hieroglyphic cartouches below the rim, likely representing a Primary Standard Sequence dedicatory text. Lower register: modeled stucco appliqué depicting elaborate serpents or deities within framed panels, with scroll and step-fret border elements. Surface with extensive blue-grey calcareous encrustation from burial context; interior with original cracking and dark organic residue, possibly cacao. Flat unglazed base.

6-1/4 in. H (approx. 16 cm)
Provenance: Private Florida Collection; ex Tom Moxley and later bought by Sam Johnson and Mitch Lewis.
