This artifact is a Maya pottery figural rattle from the Classic Period (circa 500–800 AD), measuring approximately 5-3/8 inches in height (not including the block base). The figure is crafted from natural buff-brown molded pottery and depicts an elder individual, seated with both hands resting at the waist. 
The headdress is adorned with circular elements, typical of elite or ceremonial Maya attire. Large ear ornaments, signifying status or rank within Maya society. A prominent necklace, likely representing wealth or ritual significance. Remnants of red and white paint are visible, indicating the figure was once brightly decorated. Scattered mineral deposits, areas of encrustation, and remaining paint enhance the authenticity and antiquity of the piece. The hollow body contains seeds or pebbles, allowing the figure to function as a rattle.

Figural rattles were not merely decorative. They served as musical instruments in ceremonies, funerary contexts, or as offerings. The sound produced by seeds or pebbles inside was believed to have magical or ritual significance, possibly invoking fertility, rain, or communicating with ancestors
