Early Postclassic Period, ca. 900–1200 A.D

A cylindrical vase featuring a high-relief depiction of a seated or crouching jaguar with head projecting centrally from the front wall of the cylinder, rendered with expressive almond-shaped eyes, rounded erect ears, exposed fangs, and a defined snout. The animal's body is depicted in low to medium relief framing the face, with limbs extending along the sides of the vessel wall and terminating in distinct paw-form feet resting near the rounded base. The exterior surface displays the characteristic vitrified, metallic-like sheen typical of true Plumbate ware, exhibiting a warm orange-russet to golden-ochre coloration with subtle mottling and faint surface deposits.

Plumbate-ware is distinguished as one of the few true vitrified, natural metallic-look ceramic traditions of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Created using iron- and aluminum-rich clays fired under specific reducing conditions, Tohil Plumbate vessels were prized prestige trade goods widely distributed across Maya, Toltec, and broader Mesoamerican trade networks during the Early Postclassic period.The jaguar (Panthera onca) held paramount symbolic importance in Maya cosmology, representing nocturnal power, rulership, the Underworld (Xibalba), and military prowess. Effigy vessels combining cylindrical vessel forms with high-relief animal zoomorphs served ceremonial roles, often used as ritual containers or elite mortuary offerings.
