Guerrero, Mexico. Ca. 100 BC. to 250 AD.

Carved green-gray stone abstract standing figure. The body is a straight, almost plank-like slab with no relief carving for arms, hands, or facial features, only broad planar cuts to imply head, torso, and the deep central cleft for the legs, which is characteristic of the earliest, most abstract Mezcala types described by Gay and Pratt. The head is a plain block with only planar bevels and “cheek” projections; there are no drilled eyes, mouth, or crest like nose, unlike later types such as M8, M10, or M14 that show string-sawn grooves for arms and more articulated faces. A figure fashioned for an agriculture field fertility cult from stone age man in ancient Mexico.

Size: 5-1/2  + custom base. Very good varied ancient surface, intact, overall excellent condition.

Provenance: Private Mercer Island WA collection by descent from Ruth Goldwyn Capps & Henry McClure Capps (known as Mac) who was an art director and production designer for TV & films in the mid-1950s.
