Moche Modeled Lizard Jar with Panels

A substantial Pre-Columbian bichrome earthenware jar features a rounded, globular body tapering to a flattened base, surmounted by a wide, flaring neck. The vessel is executed in characteristic Moche terracotta slip with fine cream-painted and relief detailing. Encircling the flaring rim is a continuous horizontal band of painted marine-inspired wave scrolls (volutes), a ubiquitous Moche iconographic motif tied to coastal water cults and ceremonial fertility rituals. The body is symmetrically divided into large oval reserve panels framed by register bands ornamented with concentric circular dotted roundels. Occupying the central field of each panel is a boldly modeled bas-relief lizard (likely the desert iguana or Dicrodon guttatum), depicted in profile with limbs extended and a long, gracefully curving tail that contours to the arc of the medallion. Saurians held profound cosmological significance in North Coast iconography, frequently serving as chthonic intermediaries between the earthly realm and the underworld, as well as seasonal heralds associated with arid coastal rains and El Niño climatic cycles. The sculptural modeling provides tactile three-dimensionality against the smooth terracotta ground, accentuated by the contrast between the unpigmented cream-wash medallion and the rich russet-red burnished slip.
