Ixtlán del Río  West Mexico,  Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE

A charming and expressive hand-built polychrome ceramic figure from the celebrated Ixtlán del Río tradition of West Mexico's Shaft Tomb culture. The seated woman rests upon a small stool with her legs extended forward and tapered feet finished in painted bands, her hands resting gently at her belly. She wears a striped tunic and an elaborate beaded pectoral / necklace rendered in fine cream slip circles over the warm red-brown ground, framing her chest in a lattice of ceremonial adornment. Balanced atop her head is a distinctive lobed jar, a domestic and ritual attribute often interpreted as marking the figure's role as a bearer of offerings, sustenance, or perhaps identifying her as a potter.

Her face carries the hallmarks of the Ixtlán style: applied "coffee bean" eyes, prominent hatchet nose, parted lips, projecting circular ear ornaments, and pierced septum. Traces of the original black manganese bloom and cream slip decoration remain across the surface, giving the figure the warm, earthen palette characteristic of the type. Figures of this kind were made as funerary companions, placed in the deep shaft tombs of West Mexico to accompany the dead into the afterlife.

Size:  9½ in. (24 cm) H.

Condition: Intact Very good condition overall. Warm original polychrome slip well-preserved with expected surface wear, minor abrasion, and characteristic mineral deposits consistent with excavation-era burial.
