Eastern Islamic world, probably Khorasan, circa 11th–12th century A.D.

A matched pair of large hammered and repoussé circular bronze shield bosses, each with a prominent domed central umbo pierced at the apex, encircled by a broad register of incised Arabic inscriptions and stylized floral and foliate motifs, within beaded outer borders. Both surfaces exhibit rich mottled green and brown patination with areas of cuprite and earthen accretions, enhancing the crisp relief.

Diameter 9 1/4 in (23.5 cm); depth 2 1/4 in (5.7 cm), plus custom metal and wood display stands.

Condition: Overall very good for type; some encrustation, minor pitting, and edge wear; small areas of patina loss and surface roughness consistent with age and burial; one boss with slightly more extensive verdigris and minor old repair or stabilization near the rim.

Provenance: Private collection, acquired on the London art market; previously in an Austrian collection formed in the 1970s–1980s.
