  Circa  2nd half of the 1st century BC. BC - 1st half 1st AD.

Fashioned with twin vertical grooved handles, the cylindrical neck with collared rim, the body with narrow shoulders, tapered at the base, remnants of painted decoration and marine encrustation from sea exposure.  

Size 27¼ in. (69.5 cm.) H. + tripod stand. 

Amphorae of this form were used to contain the highly esteemed Falernian and Caecuban wines which are known to have been aged in these vessels. Cp. Heinrich Dressel, Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, band XV, (Berling 1899), Form 1.

Also see a near identical example in Amphoras and the Ancient Wine Trade, no. 38 by the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, where it states that this type of amphora was the first known to have carried wine from Italy to Greece.
