 Classic Veracruz, Gulf Coast of Mexico, A.D. 450–650.

Hollow-molded buff earthenware whistle in the form of a standing female, legs set wide apart and arms held close at the sides, wearing a full flaring skirt and wide overblouse, with headband and earflares; surfaces covered with a cream slip, the eyes, mouth, and parts of the headdress picked out in bitumen, and additional geometric and garment details in red pigment.

 Size  10-3/8 in (27 cm)  H.

Classic Veracruz artists routinely built sound devices into their figural ceramics—whistles, ocarinas, flutes, and rattles—so that the object could be played in ritual performances, processions, or household ceremonies.
