Gulf Coast of Mexico — Late Classic Period, ca. 550–950 CE

A finely mold-made standing figural rattle of the Nopiloa tradition of Veracruz, depicting a frontal personage with arms held outward and palms turned forward, the hallmark gesture of Nopiloa and sonriente figures of the Gulf Coast. The serene, broad face is rendered with almond eyes, modeled nose and lips, disk ear spools, and a beaded necklace with central pendant, framed by a long, finely striated coiffure falling to the shoulders. The tunic and skirt are ornamented with crisp incised and low-relief glyphic scrollwork, the skirt panel terminating in a central crescent-and-volute device—decorative conventions characteristic of Nopiloa mold-made figures finished by hand.

The body is hollow and functions as a rattle, with ceramic pellets sealed within; the front is mold-made while the plain back is hand-smoothed, exactly as documented for the type. Surfaces retain warm orange-buff terracotta with areas of green mineral encrustation and earthen deposits on the underside, consistent with long burial. Such figural rattles served as grave offerings, their sound likely employed in funerary ritual and dance.

Height: 41/2 inches H; 5 in mounted on a  black wood block.

Provenance: Collection of Jerry Zimler (1954–1989), a clinical psychologist of New York, NY, whose practice focused primarily on work with disturbed children.
