XRF elemental analysis is consistent with pre-Columbian metallurgy practices. The sample shows a gold alloy containing:
90.89% Gold (Au)
0.30% Silver (Ag)
8.69% Copper (Cu)
This composition aligns with pre-Columbian metallurgical techniques in several ways, the combination of gold, silver, and copper was common in pre-Columbian metalwork. The high gold content (90.89%) with smaller amounts of copper and silver is consistent with techniques used in regions like Colombia and Panama, where metalworkers created sophisticated alloys for both functional and decorative purposes.  The ornamental design of the pendant, featuring decorative scrollwork and a figurative element, is characteristic of pre-Columbian ceremonial gold.
The analysis was performed using an ElvaX spectrometer, which provides accurate elemental composition data. The classification as 21.8K gold and the absence of plating further supports its authenticity as a pre-Columbian piece, as these cultures were known for creating solid alloys rather than plated pieces.

Provenance: From the estate of Andres Illies, who inherited it from his grandfather, Ferdinand Grebien. Mr. Ferdinand Grebien was born in Austria, and arrived in Panama in 1911 to work on the construction of the canal. He founded Grebien & Martinz, a major private construction firm, (with more than 1000 employees) that went on to build many major institutions in Panama, including the Municipal Palace of the District of Colón. Grebien was an avid collector of ancient Pre Columbian gold. Shown in the listing is a photo of Ferdinand Grebien displaying part of his gold collection at the 1964 World’s fair in NY.
