Greater Nicoya region, Late Period V–VI, ca. 800–1200 CE
Low, wide, red‑slipped ceramic bowl modeled as a standing bird or vulture. At one end a sculptural bird head with hooked beak and ringed, drilled eyes projects from a collared neck; the head articulated to turn within a circular mortise at the shoulder.  The compressed globular body surmounted by a wide circular mouth and flanked by four broad, wing‑like flanges incised with nested step‑fret and linear geometric motifs. The rim and upper body with continuous bands of finely incised meanders, framed by scored borders and a dotted beaded edge. The vessel stands on three solid, tapering legs terminating in modeled bird feet. Warm orange‑red slip with areas of burnish, mineral deposits, small chips and surface wear consistent with age; minor stable firing and age cracks. Two wings repaired from about 4 ot 5 pieces.  Size  5 in. H x 14 in. Length

Modeled as a vulture striding around a low tripod bowl, this Greater Nicoya effigy vessel links the carrion bird with death, renewal, and the passage between worlds. The incised geometric bands and articulated head suggest a lively ritual object, likely used to present offerings or food in ceremonies honoring ancestors and powerful sky spirits
