Powerful large hollow pottery figure of a seated warrior from ancient Nayarit, West Mexico, modeled in classic barrel‑chested form with bold facial features and strong frontal presence, created for placement in a shaft‑tomb during the Protoclassic period (ca. 100 BC–AD 250).

This impressive warrior sits upright on a bench with bent knees, broad chest thrust forward, and arms resting at the sides, embodying the solid, architectural volumes that define the finest West Mexican shaft‑tomb sculpture. The head is proportionally large, with strongly modeled nose, coffee‑bean eyes, and slightly parted mouth, details that once would have been enlivened by bright slips and burnishing. Figures of this scale and type were placed in deep shaft‑tombs as companions and protectors for the dead, evoking status, lineage, and ancestral presence in the Nayarit communities of ancient West Mexico.

Height: 20-7/8 inches 53 cm.

Provenance: Estate of D.S. (1927-2012), White Plains, New York, acquired at Parke Bernet, New York, July 23-25, 1980, lot 177A with a copy of the redacted invoice.
