Early Classic, Escuintla region, Guatemalan Highlands, circa 500 to 600 AD

Lidded orange ware cylinder vessel on raised tripod feet, decorated on either with an incised and molded monkey. The lid incised with band of coca beans and a pod shaped handle. Each of the three feet are molded with upside-down facing mask. This is a sacred vessel for the fermentation and storage of the luxury cacao bean, which monkeys also ate. Mineral deposits on surface.

Size 8-7/8 inches H. Intact very fine condition.
