These are a rare matched pair of Tlapacoya pottery figures from the Pre-Classic period of Mesoamerican history, dating approximately between 400 and 100 BC and originating from the Basin of Mexico. Each figure, made of terracotta, stands 5-1/4 inches tall (plus custom bases) and was crafted by the same artisan, as evidenced by their nearly identical form and posture. The figures are depicted in dynamic, animated poses with bent arms extended as if in motion, and are characterized by exaggerated wide hips, robust thighs, and distinctive headgear with incised lines that likely represent a ballplayer’s helmet or ceremonial headdress. Each figure wears a prominent belt with a central element that may symbolize a “hacha,” an accessory associated with Mesoamerican ballgame attire, and their hands and feet are stylized and simplified. The surfaces show traces of red and black pigment, along with mineral deposits and encrustations from burial. These figures reflect one of the earliest ceramic traditions in Mesoamerica and are believed to have had ritual or ceremonial significance, possibly related to fertility, ancestor veneration, or the Mesoamerican ballgame, as suggested by their attire and iconography. Both figures are intact, with minor surface wear and restoration consistent with their age, and they were formerly part of the Glenn Head Collection, Long Island.

Matched pairs of Tlapacoya figures are rare and exemplify the technical skill and symbolic complexity of Pre-Classic Mesoamerican cultures, providing valuable insight into the ritual life and artistic conventions of ancient central Mexico.
Many Tlapacoya and other Pre-Classic figurines have been found in burials, offering caches, and beneath household floors, indicating their role in rituals related to ancestor veneration, fertility, and spiritual protection. Their placement in these contexts suggests they were intended to connect the living with ancestors or deities, and to ensure the well-being of the household or community.
