South Italy, Sub geometric, circa 550-475 BC.

A lovely Greek Daunian ceremonial kaythos (wine ladle - dipper) painted in red and brown with strap handle surmounted by wide open circular eyes. A round, shallow bowl with tall strap handle all painted with red and dark brown geometric decoration. The rim shows thin bands with wider bands in the bottom, encircling a segmented square in the center.

The handle, painted in fine line linear and diamond shapes, is topped with double-ring 'spectacles'. The underside is painted with concentric bands, chevrons and a central square.

 Areas of the bottom are heavily encrusted with thick deposits. A rare type and desirable form.

Size  7-3/4 inches wide to handle.  Height 4-1/2 inches tall.
