Leather backing and front adorned with three polychrome glass beaded masks surrounded by three faces and wavy abstract designs.

Nigeria,

The beaded pouch of a Yoruba diviner's bag, known as "apo ileke," which holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in Yoruba society.   The intricate beadwork featuring faces and geometric patterns is not merely decorative but serves as a symbol of spiritual authority. Only those who could mediate between the physical world and orun (the realm of orisas and spirits) were permitted to possess such beaded items. These bags were specifically used by diviners, who were so closely associated with these accessories that they earned the title "akapo," meaning "carriers of bags".

The bag displays complex geometric patterns using white, blue, black, red, and gold beadwork with multiple stylized faces with distinctive circular eyes. The intricate interlace patterns symbolizing continuity and balance.

This bag contained essential items needed for Ifa divination practices.  The substances sewn into the pouches were believed to protect the diviner and ensure their power.
The use of colorful glass beads added luster to divination sessions and emphasized the high status of diviners in Yoruba society.  In Yoruba society, beaded objects were not merely decorative items but powerful symbols of authority. The detailed craftsmanship involved in their creation reflected both the artistic sophistication of Yoruba culture and their deep spiritual beliefs4. The use of specific colors and patterns in the beadwork conveyed complex ideas about power, nature, and morality within the Yoruba cosmology.
