Kushan Period, 2nd to 4th Century CE

A superb ancient Gandharan grey schist head of the Buddha, sensitively modeled in the classic Graeco-Buddhist style that flourished in the Kushan Empire across present-day Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan between the 2nd and 4th centuries CE. The full, voluminous face is carved with finely incised almond-shaped eyes, a straight classical nose, and a sensitive, softly smiling mouth; all hallmarks of the Hellenistic influence that defined Gandharan workshops of the period.

Above the serene visage rises an elaborate coiffure of rhythmic wavy locks drawn upward and gathered into the ushnisha (the cranial protuberance symbolizing transcendent wisdom),  a defining iconographic feature pioneered by Gandharan sculptors and adopted throughout later Buddhist art. Elongated earlobes reference the Buddha's princely past as Siddhartha Gautama.

+Dimensions: 6¾ inches high (17.1 cm);  + custom blackened metal display mount
Condition: Sheared at the neck with the back of the head missing; surface abrasions consistent with age and burial. Displays excellent signs of authenticity and quality, with strong sculptural presence and fine facial modeling intact.

Provenance:  Ex collection of Will Barnet (1911–2012), the acclaimed American modernist painter and printmaker represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. A longtime resident of the National Arts Club in New York, Barnet died in New York City on November 13, 2012, at the age of 101.
