Yemen, ca. 1st Century BCE to 2nd Century CE
A finely carved ancient South Arabian marble votive head rendered with softly formed, serene features — the eyes gazing forward beneath gently arching brows, the mouth slightly open, framed by stylized spiral-form ears and set upon a columnar neck originally meant to be inset into a stele or simplified body.

Carved from translucent calcite-marble, the stone retains an aged, lightly weathered surface with natural calcium deposits along the interior of the right ear — a testament to its considerable age and burial history. South Arabian sculptors prized this luminous indigenous stone for funerary and votive imagery placed in tombs and temple niches, commemorating the deceased or honoring deities of the great caravan kingdoms of Saba, Qataban, and Ma'in.

A compelling and well-preserved example of ancient Arabian portraiture, intact and handsomely presented on a custom wood display base.

Dimensions: Head 5-1/2 in. H. x 4 in. W. x 4-1/4 in. D., plus custom base

Condition: Intact, with natural calcium deposits along the interior of the right ear
