A handsome example of South Italian Greek black-gloss tableware, this deep-bodied mug features the characteristic high-fired lustrous surface achieved through refined clay slip rather than pigment — a technology inherited from Attic production that spread widely through Apulia during the 4th century BC.Wheel-thrown terracotta vessel with a globular body, short cylindrical neck, and broadly flaring rim, fitted with a single compact loop handle rising from the shoulder and attaching just under the lip. The exterior is covered in a dense, near-metallic black gloss typical of well-fired Apulian workshops, with expected minor surface flaking and earthen encrustation consistent with burial.

Height: 3-5/8 in. (approx. 9.2 cm), comparable in scale to published examples in museum and market collections.

Produced in Apulia (modern Puglia, southern Italy), these black-glazed drinking vessels were made by Greek colonial potters who, after importing Attic wares through the 5th century BC, began producing their own fine tableware to supply the local market. Mugs of this form served as everyday wine-drinking cups and are well represented in collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the NGV Melbourne.
