Greek, Attic; late 6th century BC, circa 520–500 BC.
Wall fragment from an Attic black-figure kyathos (single-handled ladle-cup used to dip wine from a krater). within the floruit of kyathos production by workshops such as those of the Theseus Painter and related hands.
Dimensions: 2¼ in. H × 1½ in. W (approx. 5.7 × 3.8 cm).
The fragment repaired from two pieces preserves a portion of the figural frieze showing a reclining bearded symposiast at the banquet. The figure wears an elaborate white-dotted fillet/wreath in the hair, reclines on a couch (kline) with striped cushion/mattress articulated in added red and reserved ground, and the torso is rendered in the characteristic black silhouette with fine incised interior details for the drapery folds and anatomy. At right, a large black grape-cluster/vine pendant with added-white dotted berries hangs before him — a quintessential Dionysiac attribute of the symposion scene. Above the figure runs a reserved zone bordered by a double row of black dots (a band-ornament common on the shoulder of kyathoi and small oinochoai of this period), and below, the compositional field terminates in a reserved line above the lower body-glaze with added-red accents.
