Egypt, Circa 4th–6th Century AD

This narrow tapestry-woven band, executed in dark red-brown wool on a tan linen ground, preserves a vertical sequence of stylized dancing figures alternating with animal figures enclosed in roundels and arches, flanked by a scalloped hooked border. The weaver has reserved the pale linen ground to model the bodies against the deep "Coptic purple" wool, a hallmark of Late Antique Egyptian workshops, with sparing touches of tan-ochre wool for accent. The dancing figures within an arcade-and-medallion framework derive ultimately from Greco-Roman Dionysiac imagery, which persisted in Egyptian textile ornament well into the Byzantine period, and comparable bands are firmly placed in the fifth century. The fragment survives in fair condition consistent with its age: the wool weft shows numerous small losses and areas of thinning that expose the linen substrate, the cut edges are irregular, and the original purple has faded to a warm brown, with some tatters but no evident modern restoration; it is flat-mounted and framed under glass.

The band formed part of the woven decoration of a garment—almost certainly a tunic clavus or ornamental border—rather than an independent hanging, its figural imagery signaling status and carrying auspicious, celebratory connotations for the wearer.
