Circa 5th to 4th Century BC

This vessel from ancient Apulia (southern Italy) carries profound symbolic meaning tied to ritual, status, and the spiritual beliefs of the Daunians, an Iron Age Italic people. The vessel’s distinctive form and geometric decoration reflect central motifs in Daunian art: cosmic cycles, fertility, healing, and ritual presence.  The animal or anthropomorphic figure attached to the rim evokes the presence of ancestral, divine, or animistic spirits. Horns symbolize power, fertility, and a connection to the supernatural. Such protomes on Daunian vessels often represented priestesses, shamans, or animal guardians active in sacred rituals or healing ceremonies.
Daunian vessels like this were closely associated with female-centered rites of healing, medicine, and fertility. Scenes and symbols identified on both stelae and ceramics point to a focus on women as priestesses, healers, and ritual leaders. The use of poppy plant motifs and medicinal substances in some vessels hints at a practice of ritual healing and trance induction.
