Panama,  circa  1000 to 1500  AD.

The Frog has a classic body, cast with large hind flippers and bulbous eyes. From the mouth emanate two side facing saurian heads back to back, conveying a mythological significance. Dimension: Length 2-3/4 inches; 22k gold tested;  weight including pin frame: 27.2 dwt. (42.3 gms)

XRF elemental analysis shows it is made of 22.1K gold (92.13% Au) with 7.79% copper , which is consistent with Pre-Columbian metallurgy.  The ornamental piece displays characteristic Pre-Columbian goldworking features: The intricate scrollwork and stylized design is typical of Pre-Columbian artistic traditions
The artifact appears to be a personal adornment piece, which was one of the primary uses of gold in Pre-Columbian cultures. Gold ornaments were worn as symbols of status and power, often incorporated into ceremonial regalia or used in religious contexts3.
The high gold content and sophisticated lost-wax casting technique evident in the piece's detailed design further support its Pre-Columbian origin, as these cultures were renowned for their advanced metalworking capabilities.

Provenance: Ex Sheldon Collection, Falmouth, Maine acq 1980s.

A similar example is illustrated in the exhibition catalog, Between Continents/ Between Seas; Pre Columbian Art of Costa Rica, fig. 287.  A similar frog is also the Rockefeller Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
