This stone head depicts the ancient Egyptian god Amun, one of the most important deities in Egyptian mythology. The sculpture exhibits several key characteristics that identify it as a representation of Amun; he wears a distinctive flat cap or crown, which would have originally been topped with tall feathers, a signature element of Amun's iconography.
Amun was considered the "King of the Gods" and was associated with air, sun, and fertility.
This sculpture shows characteristics typical of Late Meroitic art (1st century BCE - 4th century CE), particularly the emphasis on prominent, deeply carved eyes which is characteristic of later Meroitic sculpture.  The simplified, geometric treatment of facial features to essential details, reflects continental African influences. The head exhibits a blend of Egyptian and Hellenistic influences that was common in Meroitic art: The almond-shaped eyes with heavy outlines show Egyptian artistic origins.
The overall style shows Greco-Roman influence, which became more pronounced after Egypt came under Greek and Roman control.
