26th Dynasty, Circa 626 to 525 B.C.

The thick body rounded at the shoulders and tapering in towards the flat base, incised with a rectangular panel of four columns of hieroglyphic text, where Duamutef, names the owner as 'Wahibremeryneith', with an old collection note on the reverse, the sealed stopper of banded alabaster, not originally belonging, in the form of the falcon-headed Qebehsenuef, one of the Four Sons of Horus, with carved eyes and beak and stippled facial details.

The text on the jar names Duamutef, the jackal-headed son of Horus who was the protector of the stomach; however the sealed lid depicts the falcon-headed Qebehsenuef protector of the intestines. It is clear that these two parts originally came from separate jars and perhaps were incorrectly re-used together in antiquity.

Size 11¼in (28.6cm) Height

Provenance:  Property of a private London collector, who acquired it from Annie Trotter, London, in about 1990. The label on the jar reads 'Conglomorite limestone canopic jar of WAH-IB-RE-MERY-NEITH. 26 Dyn. From McMullen (James B.M. 1950)'.
