Second Intermediate Period, circa 1650–1550 B.C.   Carved from pale grey-buff steatite in the classic beetle form with a naturalistically modeled head, clypeus, and divided elytra along the back, the underside engraved with a striding gazelle rendered in confident incised line, its slender legs, arched neck, and swept horns filling the oval field. A longitudinal suspension channel pierces the body from end to end, and a small residue of green-corroded iron or bronze remains lodged within the perforation, evidence of an ancient or old-collection metal pin or mount once fitted through the scarab. The steatite retains its warm ochre-buff surface with light mineral encrustation and scattered dark deposits consistent with burial, and the carving is crisp and unworn, with a small area of green corrosion product adhering externally near the perforation but no chips or losses to the beetle form itself. Measuring 18 x 12 mm, the scarab compares closely with the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Scarab with Horned Animal and Uraei (acc. 22.1.329), a steatite example of the same Second Intermediate Period date bearing a nearly identical antelope-or-gazelle motif, and with related Hyksos-period animal-motif scarabs recovered from the Memphite region..  Compare, Petrie’s Historical Scarabs for the type.  Provenance: Ex  Satna fe NM collector, Acquired in The USA Market.
