Etruscan, ca. mid-5th century B.C.

A finely cast Etruscan solid bronze figure of a nude youth standing on an integral beaded double-ring platform base, his right leg slightly advanced. His hands draw open the flaps of a cuirass-like garment worn across the shoulders and back, revealing the modeled torso beneath. The armor is enlivened with crisp incised ornament — zig-zag and cross-hatched panels on the shoulder guards and lower edge — while the finely engraved hair radiates from the crown, falls over the forehead, and rolls up at the nape; the large almond eyes are set off by raised rims. The figure preserves a handsome reddish-brown patina with scattered blue-green surface, and was almost certainly made as the crowning finial of a bronze candelabrum, a characteristic Etruscan luxury form.

Dimensions: 3¼ in. (8.25 cm) H × 1¼ in. (3.17cm) W

Condition: Intact, excellent condition; deep reddish-brown patina with scattered blue-green areas

Provenance  Ex collection of Barbara and Lawrence A. Fleischman, New York; acquired Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc., New York, Important Ancient and Islamic Glass, Classical, Egyptian, and Near Eastern Antiquities, Thursday, 13 December 1979, lot 326 (full-page illustrated)

Lawrence A. Fleischman (1925–1997) and his wife Barbara assembled one of the most important private collections of ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art in the United States and among the most significant in the world. The collection was exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1994–95 under the title A Passion for Antiquities, with a major scholarly catalogue, and the bulk of it was acquired by the Getty Museum in 1996 in a transaction valued at roughly $80 million. The Fleischmans were also distinguished patrons of the arts, supporting the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, the Frick, and the Smithsonian, among many others. An object with documented Fleischman ownership carries one of the most respected pedigrees in the American antiquities market and, importantly, a pre-1979 publication record that satisfies modern provenance scrutiny.
