This is an exceptional and historically significant artwork from West Mexico's Protoclassic period (100 B.C. to A.D. 250). Standing at an impressive 16-3/8 inches (approximately 41.6 cm) in height, this voluminous, burnished red-ware figure captures the essence of a revered spiritual leader. The shaman is depicted seated with one arm on its hips, showcasing meticulously sculpted details such as the characteristic shell pectoral and incised body armor. A unique feature is the central raised crest atop the head, which functions as a vessel rim, suggesting its dual purpose as both effigy and container, perhaps used in ancient rituals for offerings or libations to aid the deceased on their journey. The exceptional quality and fine condition of this piece make it a particularly desirable example of Colima pottery, which is celebrated for its distinctive red slip and insightful portrayals of daily life and social structures, offering a rare window into the beliefs of ancient West Mexican societies. Shamans, as crucial intermediaries between the human and spiritual realms, played a vital role in guiding both the living and the dead. Further enhancing its significance is its noted provenance, having been part of the distinguished collection of Dr. Albert Altchek (1926-2011) of Fifth Avenue, New York. This remarkable artifact not only embodies the sophisticated artistic skill of the Colima culture but also serves as a potent testament to the enduring spiritual and cultural legacy of Pre-Columbian West Mexico.
