Graeco-Roman Circa 2nd to 4th Century A.D.

Set in a modern gold ring is a rare hematite oval intaglio engraved with Abraxas (or Abrasax), a monstrous figure with cock's head, human body and serpent form legs, standing, holding a whip and a shield, the reverse with two line Greek magical text.
Size of gemstone 1.5 cm x 1.25 cm W.; 7.25 ring size
Provenance: Private Brooklyn Collection, acquired from the London trade.
