Eastern Mediterranean, Hellenistic Period, circa 350 BC,

modeled in the round in fine buff-orange clay with hand-finished details. The figure kneels with the torso turned slightly to one side, the head inclined downward in an expression of pathos, with short wavy hair rendered in fine incised lines and a sensitively modeled face with fleshy cheeks, almond-shaped eyes and a straight nose; the nude body is well-proportioned with naturalistic breast and abdominal modeling. A large billowing garment sweeps dramatically behind the back, creating a strong diagonal mass that balances the composition. Right arm and left hand missing; surface with overall earthen encrustation and age-consistent wear.

Height 4-3/8 inches (11.1 cm). + black wooden block display base.

The pose — kneeling, nude, with drapery flung behind — closely echoes the famous Niobid type known from 4th-century sculpture, where the daughters of Niobe are struck down by Apollo and Artemis; the anguished turn of the head and the sweeping cloak are canonical features of that group. An identification with  Leda (cf. the statue by Timotheos) remains possible. Either reading places this piece within the finest tradition of late Classical to early Hellenistic coroplastic art in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Provenance: Formerly in the German private collection of D.T.; acquired between 1987 and before 2000.
