North Coast Peru  Late Intermediate, ca. 1000–1470 AD

Hammered and repoussé-worked silver bowl with slightly tapered walls and an out-folded rim lip, the interior base decorated in relief with a large striding sea bird — long legs and beak, the head turned with a prominent round eye and fanned tail. The surface retains a warm, lightly oxidized patina, and the form and motif closely follow documented North Coast silver examples.

Many Andean peoples placed funerary offerings with high-status individuals; the vessels could be wood, ceramic, or cloth, but those of the most powerful were of gold and silver. Chimú and related North Coast metalsmiths (heirs to the earlier Sicán/Lambayeque tradition) were master silver- and goldworkers, producing raised and repoussé vessels for elite burials at centers like Chan Chan. Bird, fish, and feline motifs are characteristic of this North Coast repertoire.

Condition: Intact; warm patina

Size: 4-1/8 in. Diam. (10.5 cm), excluding mount; on custom display mount.
