Borneo (Kalimantan), likely Kenyah, Kayan, or Bahau peoples, late 19th to early 20th century.

This dramatic festival mask takes an aquatic, sea-creature form, its long curvilinear snout carved with a serrated saw-tooth outline and surrounded by long, thin flexible reed prongs inserted into the muzzle to suggest whiskers or barbels. The face bears projecting button eyes with viewing apertures beneath, separately carved and rattan-attached scrolling "winged" ears, and bold black scrolling aso/dragon-motif designs painted over red and dark ground, with a lower jaw attached by fiber lashing.

Hudoq masks functioned in agricultural masquerade rites of the Dayak peoples of East Kalimantan, worn by costumed dancers who impersonated protective spirits entering the village during the rice-planting and harvest cycle to drive away pests and ensure fertility and a bountiful harvest.

Size 18 in. (45.7 cm) in height and 21 in. (53.3 cm) in width, with the projecting prongs extending well beyond the face. Comes with a custom wall mount. No table base.

Condition: surface wear, pigment loss, and losses to the reed whiskers, consistent with age and ritual use.

Cf. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for a closely related Kenyah or Kayan Hudoq mask, wood, paint, and fiber, H. 18 in. (45.7 cm), gift of Fred and Rita Richman (acc. no. 1988.143.77).

Provenance: Ex collection of a New York City institution.
