The Makonde people of Tanzania and Mozambique are renowned for their masks used in initiation rituals, especially for boys and girls transitioning into adulthood. The most iconic type is the helmet mask, known as “lipiko,” which often features realistic, portrait-like features, sometimes adorned with real human hair affixed with beeswax. These masks represent ancestral spirits or caricatures and are essential in the dances (mapiko) marking the completion of initiation ceremonies
